Dengue-hit Melur block in Madurai district has been brought under tight surveillance with special teams swinging into action on Saturday for mass cleaning work to eliminate mosquito breeding sources.
Following instructions given by Collector Anshul Mishra on Friday, a team of officials from revenue and health departments visited villages in Melur block from where more suspected and confirmed dengue fever positive cases are being reported.
The anti-dengue operation is being coordinated by Additional Collector G. K. Arun Sundar Dayalan. Villages covered include A. Vellalapatti, Ceylon Colony, Arittapatti, Kallampatti, Keelavalavu, Sadhiapuram, Vellalur and Tiruvadhavur.

In Melur municipality area, the teams laid focus on Old Chukkampatti.
While mosquito breeding sources and water stagnation spots are being cleared, the public health teams have also taken up anti-larval work, abet application in water tanks and mass cleaning with the help of panchayat staff. Fogging was done to reduce mosquito density and steps have been taken for adequate water chlorination.
While the district administration was represented by the Additional Collector, the overall supervision and review of dengue control activities is being done by T. N. Ramanathan, senior IAS officer and Commissioner of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, who has been deputed by the State Government to oversee the control measures in dengue affected districts.

Vadivelan, Joint Director of Public Health, S. Senthilkumar, Deputy Director of Health Services, and Latha Freeda Joan, District Malaria Officer, were among those who visited various hamlets in Melur block to supervise the cleaning work, which would go on for a week. The Collector will hold a review meeting on Friday to note the progress.
