‘Set high standards in public life’

Lectures on this year’s Vigilance Awareness Week theme, ‘Preventive vigilance as a tool of good governance,’ were organised by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Tamil Nadu Power Limited in city colleges on Tuesday and Wednesday to promote awareness among students of the need to apply ethics, values and morals as tools of good governance.

A. R. Ramachandran, former Senior Manager, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, spoke on the theme at a programme organised at the American College. M. Davamani Christober, Principal, presided.

At a meeting conducted at Velammal Medical College, C. L. Ramakrishnan, former Director General of Police, in his address, focussed on the role of the youth in building a strong India based on ethics. A. Madhavan, Director, Cardiology, in his presidential address, wanted the students to follow ethics in all walks of life.

At a meeting organised at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Mr. Ramakrishnan said that combating corruption alone would result in eradication of poverty and accelerated economic growth.

Prizes were distributed to students who topped in the essay competition held as part of the Vigilance Awareness Week, according to a press release from S. Gurusamynathan, General Manager, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited.

The State Bank of India is observing vigilance awareness week till October 31 to create public awareness against corruption.

The bank’s Deputy General Manager Manikantan Nair presided over at a meeting held at KLN College of Engineering on the theme ‘corruption a cancer: ways for eradication’.

Speakers called for the students to set high standards in public life as corrupt free society would remove bottlenecks and pave way for good governance.

College Prof. Balasubramanian coordinated the event, a press release issued said.
