A team of scientists and research scholars, who are in the city for the three-day Indian Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration meeting, undertook a visit to the site of the proposed project at Pottipuram in Theni district on Saturday.

The site will house an underground experimental facility with a 50,000-tonne magnetic detector to study neutrinos that are significant in particle physics.

The team, comprising of 20 scientists and 30 research scholars, was led by Naba K. Mondal, Senior Professor and spokesperson for the INO project, and Vivek Datar from the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.

For many of the academic scholars who were pursuing their research about neutrino, this was their first visit to the proposed INO site.

N. Marimuthu, who is working with the Neutrino Detector Development research at Banaras Hindu University said he was immensely proud that the country was readying to host such an advanced experimental facility.

An outreach programme was conducted later in the day where scientists interacted with research scholars and the general public about the INO project and the Inter-Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics (IICHEP) at Vadapalanji in Madurai district, the nodal point for the INO.
