Schools getting ready for the hustle and bustle of students

As the summer vacation drew to an end, schools in the city are all set to witness the hustle and bustle of students from Monday.

According to officials of the School Education Department, elaborate measures have been taken to ensure that freebies such as textbooks, notebooks and uniforms are distributed to students on Monday, the first day of the academic year 2014-15. “All the study materials and uniforms have already been sent to the schools, and the work was completed on Saturday,” said K. Jaya Meena Devi, District Educational Officer of Madurai educational district.

Collector L. Subramanian would officially kick-start the distribution of freebies to students at Government Higher Secondary School in S. Puliankulam on Monday, she said, adding there were 111 schools in Madurai educational district.

Officials would visit various schools to supervise the freebies distribution. “We have issued instructions to the schools to work hard from the beginning of the academic year to get better results in the SSLC and Plus Two board examinations. The instructions were issued after there was a dip in pass percentage in recent results,” Ms. Devi said.

The three educational districts of Madurai, Usilampatti and Melur had recorded a pass percentage of 92.33 in Plus Two examinations in 2013-2014 academic year. In 2012-2013, the pass percentage was 93.77.

In 2013-2014 SSLC examinations, the pass percentage recorded was 93.13, whereas it was 93.43 in 2012-2013.

Chief Educational Officer of Madurai Corporation S. Mary said motivational classes would be conducted for SSLC and Plus Two students soon. “Our goal this year is to get the highest pass percentage in the State. We are planning to conduct special training programmes for the teachers as well,” Ms. Mary told The Hindu .
