14 road intersections come under real time CCTV coverage

Secret route no more: Commissioner of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham inspecting the Ring Road-Vandiyur junction in Madurai on Friday.

Madurai City police have provided closed circuit television (CCTV) camera network coverage at 14 important road intersections under Vilakkuthoon police station limits.

This facility helps the police to keep tabs on all these junctions from the police station itself. “We have provided two monitors at the reception of Vilakkuthoon police station to watch the movement of vehicles. The cameras have high resolution to capture even the registration number of vehicles,” Commissioner of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham said.

Talking to reporters after inaugurating a permanent check post at Ring Road-Vandiyur Road junction here on Friday, Mr. Davidson said similar effort to cover important junctions under Tallakulam police station was under way. Wiring work was going on at all intersections, except for New Natham Road where the elevated highway work was in progress.

“Next will be Anna Nagar police station area. We are initially proceeding with provision of CCTV network in police stations functioning in permanent buildings,” Mr. Davidson said.

The Vandiyur junction check post would be manned by at least two police personnel throughout the day. “Vehicle checks will be conducted round-the-clock at this important junction,” he added. Vandiyur Road had been a ‘secret route’ for antisocial elements from Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts to sneak into the city and flee after committing crimes. Once inside Vandiyur, they mingle with the thick population of the area. “Most of the criminals use two-wheelers and four-wheelers. We hope that regular vehicle check will prevent infiltration of anti-social elements into the city,” he said.

The check post, third under Anna Nagar police station and 20th of Madurai City police, would be provided with CCTV cameras soon.

The Commissioner, who inspected the Ring Road-Vandiyur junction, instructed the police officials to immediately take measures to slow down movement of vehicles on Ring Road. He said barricades would be put up in a zig-zag formation so that the junction becomes safe for road users to cross to the other side.
