It is an euphemism for job cuts, says association

Against job cut: Members of Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Association, DYFI and SFI forming a human chain in Madurai on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Association, in association with youth organisations such as Students Federation of India, formed a human chain here on Tuesday in protest against Staff Rationalisation Committee constituted by the State government through Government Order 56.

According to the protesters, the committee which aims to identify ‘redundant’ jobs and ones that can be outsourced, was nothing but an euphemism for job cuts and privatisation of various services.

K. Jayarajarajeswaran, district president of the association, said that the committee, if allowed to function, would recommend job cuts in the already short-staffed government departments.

He said that the youth organisations also took part in the protest since reduction of jobs would mean reduced opportunity for getting government jobs.

If the government did not repeal the order and disband the committee, the association would intensify the protests across the State, he said.
