Registration Certificate of vehicles driven by those in a drunken state will be cancelled temporarily, according to Regional Transport Officer K. Anand.
Talking to media persons here on Thursday, he said that the RC would be cancelled for two months. After two months, the RC would be returned to the owner after recording punishment details.
Similarly, RC of commercial vehicles transporting persons would also be cancelled instantly. This decision was taken in a meeting with Collector T.G. Vinay, Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan and transport officials at the Collectorate.

Such stringent measure would certainly prevent drunk driving to a large extent, he added.
Already, the office of the RTO had given clear cut instructions to lorry owners association and other vehicle operators in this connection.
They also assured to cooperate with the RTO and instruct lorry and van drivers not to use their vehicles for transporting persons for functions and temple festivals. Stringent action would be initiated against violators, he cautioned.

Regional Transport Inspector K. Manivannan said that the RC of three vehicles were cancelled during surprise raid this month so far.
186 cases
A total of 186 drunken driving cases – including 100 in Palani and 86 in Dindigul limits were filed last month. He also advised commercial vehicle operators not to use their vehicles for transporting people and drive vehicles under the influence of liquor.
