Ramanathapuram plunges into darkness

Several parts of the district headquarters, nearby areas and Rameswaram island were plunged into darkness the whole of Wednesday night and Thursday evening after power transmission lines in high transmission towers snapped at two places.

The power which went off around 9 p.m. on Wednesday was restored in the early hours of Thursday only go off in the evening. The district headquarters hospital and other private hospitals managed with generators while public faced inconvenience in view of hot conditions in the day.

Officials said power went off when transmission line in high transmission towers between Vazhuthur and RS Madai sub-stations got snapped after ceramic insulators broke. After hours of work, employees of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation restored power supply around 2 a.m.

A few minutes later, power went off again due to snapping of similar power transmission line at a high transmission tower near Sakkarakottai. The employees mobilised additional strength and restored power supply in the early hours of Thursday. Before people could heave a sigh of relief, power went off at several areas in the headquarters in the evening. Public complained that the officials failed to attend calls and explain reasons for frequent power failures. Officials assured to restore normal power supply after rectifying faults in local sub-stations.
