November 19, 2013 01:14 pm | Updated 01:14 pm IST - MADURAI:

Space for 49 operators is ready in the new place proposed for omni bus stand

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa on Monday said private omni buses leaving for different destinations from the city would soon depart from Maatuthavani.

The Corporation had earmarked funds and space adjacent to the integrated bus stand at Maatuthavani in view of the traffic congestion being experienced regularly in the central parts of the city, where the omni buses had their parking spaces near Periyar bus stand.

Space for 49 operators is ready in the new place proposed for the omni bus stand. Apart from this, toilet facilities, shelter and storm water drainage facilities were also being provided in the new facility. Though the Mayor was not sure of the exact date of the completion of the works, he said they would get over at the earliest.

The officials, who accompanied the Mayor, said close to 60 omni buses could be parked in the area and this would decongest traffic in and around Periyar bus stand.

Autorickshaw drivers said they should be given space adjacent to the upcoming omni bus stand. The Corporation officials said their demand would be considered.
