Four police personnel injured in stone pelting; 17 arrested

Four police personnel, including Inspector of Police, Sivakumar, of Irukkangudi station, were injured when stones were pelted at them reportedly by cadre of Puthiya Tamilagam at Nagalapuram under Irrukkangudi police limits on Wednesday.

While the Inspector who sustained bleeding injuries on his right eyebrow was given five sutures at the the Primary Health Centre at Nenmeni. Later, the Inspector along with Sub-Inspector of Police, Vijayaraghavan, Special SI, Rengarajan, and constable Ramesh, who sustained swellings on shoulder and hands, were given treatment at the Government Hhospital in Sattur.

Sattur Tahsildar, A. Shanthi, said that cadre of Puthiya Tamilagam, on Saturday, had erected a party flag mast on roadside at Nagalapuram bus stop without obtaining permission. After some local people objected to the new flag pole, the Tahsildar, along with the police team, had gone to the village to remove it.

Road roko

A section of villagers along with the party cadres, led by its branch secretary, Karuppasamy, staged a road roko protesting against the action by the revenue officials.

Even as the police attempted to arrest the agitators, some people hurled stones at the police, the Tahsildar said. However, the mast was removed.

The police arrested 17 persons, including nine women, for assaulting the police.
