Madurai district police on Tuesday submitted a 13,000-page report on granite-related police cases to the High Court-appointed Legal Commissioner, U. Sagayam.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Prohibition Enforcement Wing), Mariappan, who holds additional charge of ADSP (Headquarters), along with a team of police officials, handed over the voluminous report to Mr. Sagayam, appointed to probe into the granite scam in Madurai district.
A huge sealed parcel containing the report running to 12,746 pages was carried to Mr. Sagayam’s office in the Old Ramanathapuram District Collectorate complex.

The report pertains to various police cases registered with regard to illegal granite mining in the district. The district police had registered over 190 cases so far, since 2012. They included cases against granite quarry operators for stealing granite from patta and government poromboke land over and above the permitted area.
Besides, several cases of criminal intimidation, land grab and encroachment on private land and destruction of government infrastructure have been registered against them.
The report gives details of police cases, action taken, particulars of cases pending before courts and their status.

Similarly, the copies of correspondence made by the district police with other State and Central government agencies like Customs, Income Tax, Regional Passport Office, Enforcement Directorate and other departments were also produced before the Legal Commissioner.
Mr. Sagayam, who had inspected scores of quarry sites since December 2014 and processed over 650 petitions received from the affected people, is in the process of collating the details from the reports submitted by various government departments.
He is likely to submit the report to the High Court in June.
