Members of the Tamil Nadu Association of Senior Civil Surgeons (TNASCS) have sought immediate implementation of the government order that mandates appointment of senior faculty members in administrative posts on a rotation basis to spare them additional work load.
This was among the resolutions passed during the extraordinary general body meeting at Government Rajaji Hospital here on Saturday.
At the meeting, the members also passed a resolution seeking appointment of professors and assistant professors in medical college hospitals across the State to avoid deputation of doctors to other medical colleges during Medical Council of India (MCI) inspections.

As per MCI norms, the State government must identify vacancies in medical college hospitals and fill them up regularly.
But several departments in the GRH were still short of assistant professors and professors, they noted.
“Since senior professors are given additional charge of administrative positions, they are subjected to a lot of stress,” said Dr. N. Balanayagam, Treasurer, TNASCS.

“Besides, the practice of holding a doctor in the same position for several years should be changed. Doctors must be nominated for the post, based on their seniority,” he added.
The TNASCS members also alleged that a circular in this regard had already been issued by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), but it had not been implemented.
Among the departments facing staff shortage at the GRH were General Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Anaesthesiology, they added.
According to GRH doctors, each department comprises a minimum of five units, which require at least four assistant professors.
With the launch of new courses for paramedical staff, there was a need for more faculty members.
