Plan to resolve caste tensions

The government is working on a blueprint to resolve caste tensions among the youth. Police and education department officials put their heads together to come up with a proposal during a three-day meet held in Chennai recently.

The IAS and IPS officers, who were part of the conclave, said that the recent incidents in the southern districts had triggered serious and urgent introspection. Officials briefed Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on the urgency of the problem.

Leaders such as Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar and many others needed to be held up as role models for youth. To effect change, the officers suggested collaboration between education and police department officials.

As a first step, good communicators from the teaching community should be identified and topics on great leaders could be dealt with in a strong medium like drama, skit and short plays, which would remain evergreen in the minds of the next generation.
