Condemning the action of the State police to detain Tibetan activists ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Mamallapuram in Kancheepuram district, People’s Watch, a Madurai-based NGO, has called for their immediate release.

Executive Director of People’s Watch Henri Tiphagne said Tibetans in India believed in non-violence and strongly adhered to it. They only engaged in creative means of protest to get their demands for ‘Free Tibet’ known to the world, especially during visits of Chinese dignitaries.

The Right to Life as enshrined in the Indian Constitution applied not just to its citizens but to all persons, which included Tibetans. All Tibetans activists and students detained by the police should be released immediately.

He added that the Director General of Police should have a dialogue with the Tibetan leaders and allow them space to express themselves in a non-violent manner. It must be ensured that their right to peaceful assembly and protest was upheld.
