Passenger earnings up in Madurai division

It has handled 1.75 crore passengers in the current financial year: DRM

Madurai railway division has registered 9.19% growth in passenger earnings in the current fiscal when compared to the corresponding period in 2017-18.

Unfurling the national flag here on Thursday, Divisional Railway Manager V.R. Lenin said the division handled 1.75 crore passengers in the current financial year and earned ₹196.93 crore. In the total earnings front, the division had recorded gross apportioned earnings of ₹276.83 crore in the first four months of this fiscal.

During April to July, ₹1.69 crore was collected through ticket checking, 14.57% more than what was collected in the same period last year. The division was able to maintain punctuality of 90.4 % for express trains and 95.3 % for passenger trains in the first quarter, despite increased traffic blocks for maintenance.

To clear extra rush of passengers, 186 special trains were run and five pairs of trains were permanently augmented with one 3AC coach. As part of project ‘Utkrisht,’ two rakes of Rameswaram – Tirupati and Rameswaram – Kanniyakumari express trains were upgraded.

LHB coaches were being used for Bhubaneswar – Ramewaram Express, Madurai – Chennai Egmore Vaigai Express and Karaikudi – Chennai Egmore Pallavan Express,Mr.Lenin said.

Additional Divisional Railway Managers Lalit Kumar Mansukhani and O.P. Shaw were present.
