One more ‘Amma Unavagam’

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated the 12th ‘Amma Unavagam’ in the city, at Sundararajapuram, through video-conferencing on Sunday.

The low-cost canteen will be run by 12 members of Veerakaliamman Women’s Self-Help Group. Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa initiated the sales as residents queued up to have ‘sambar’ rice and ‘kesari.’

Ten ‘Amma Unavagams’ were opened in the city in June 2013. One more was opened on the Government Rajaji Hospital premises in 2014. Those at K. Pudur, Santhaipettai, Tirupparankundram and Melavasal have ISO certification.

Mr. Chellappa said that the 11 canteens had served 58.52 lakh persons till date. “For one year, a sum of Rs. 9.57 crore was spent for the 11 canteens, of which Rs. 2.25 crore was used from revenue generated at the canteens and Rs. 7.02 crore from the Corporation general fund,” he said.

“The new ‘Amma Unavagam’ proposes to sell 1,200 ‘idlis’ in the morning at Re 1 each, and 300 plates of ‘sambar’ rice (Rs. 5 a plate) and curd rice (Rs. 3) in the afternoon,” Mr. Chellappa added.

More facilities

Ms. Jayalalithaa, also inaugurated a police quarters with 226 flats on the Armed Reserve Ground premises, a new building for Vilakkuthoon police station and two barracks, through video-conferencing the same day.

Collector L. Subramanian and Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav, among other officials, were present during the inauguration proceedings. of these facailities
