Odisha crafts fair on in Madurai

Jewellery, saris, dress materials, artefacts up for sale

Utkal Hastasilpa Society, Bhubaneswar, has put up a crafts exhibition, ‘Odisha Crafts Utsav 2014’ showcasing handicrafts from across the country at V.S. Chellam Saraswathi Mahal on Kamarajar Salai and at Vijaya Mahal in K.K. Nagar in the city simultaneously.

The exhibition, which is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., will go on till February 10.

A range of jewellery, saris and dress materials, toys, artefacts and paintings are up for sale.

The jewellery on display includes wooden Channapatna bangles and five-metal anklets, bangles, chains and earrings.

Trays, bowls, small tables, centrepieces, key holders and wall hangings made of wood and brought from Uttar Pradesh are also up for sale.

“The appliqué paintings on fabric and artwork on palm leaf from Odisha are very unique. Special dress materials from Odisha including kurtis and shawls with intricate embroidery are also sold,” the organisers said on Sunday.

Similarly, the exhibition had a range of exquisite fabrics on display. Rajasthani chiffon and Bandhini saris as well as Sungudi saris from Madurai were very popular among the customers, A. Kumar, a salesperson at a sari stall, said.

“Despite the arrival of new fabrics and designs, Sungudi saris are still popular in Madurai,” he added.
