Novel protest by nursing students

February 03, 2014 01:12 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 05:35 am IST - MADURAI

As the strike of the government nursing college students entered its sixth day on Sunday, the students staged a sit-in protest by blindfolding themselves at Government Rajaji Hospital, demanding revocation of the government order that enables private nursing students to enter government service.

Around 300 students participated in the protest to express their displeasure over the government’s silence in this regard.

The students resolved to continue their protest as the talks held between their representatives and health department officials in Chennai on Saturday failed to break the deadlock.

Reacting to the allegation made by private nursing college students on practical experience, S. Karthick, a representative of Students Federation of India, said the government nursing students had more practical experience than their counterparts in private colleges. Hence, priority must be given to government students, he demanded. Meanwhile, United Graduate Nurses’ Association said it would hold a demonstration on Monday, condemning the government nursing students’ strike.
