A nine-month-old female baby died of dengue fever in the city on Friday night, following severe complications due to secondary infection.
The baby from Ellis Nagar was admitted to Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), where her parents are working as doctors.
The baby, who was suffering from fever, was diagnosed as dengue-positive after several tests on admission to the hospital on December 16.

“Though blood transfusion was done, she could not recover because of secondary infection. . Our medical reports confirmed that the child suffered problems in blood circulation due to dengue fever,” A. Kannan, Head, Department of Paediatrics, MMHRC, told
The hospital will now submit reports to the Madurai Corporation about dengue diagnosis and treatment given to the baby.
“A team from the corporation had come to our hospital to enquire about the baby’s death. We told them clearly that the child had dengue and there was no other reason other than dengue coupled with infection. Facts cannot be changed because medical records are available with the baby’s parents also,” Dr. Kannan said.

“The cause of death is severe dengue with shock, Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. This baby tested Dengue NS-1 Positive,” the hospital sources said.
This is the second death reported in the city this month.
On December 2, a ninth class girl of Keezha Sandhaipettai from an aided school near Kamarajar Salai, died of dengue without responding to treatment at Government Rajaji Hospital.
After her death, Collector L. Subramanian had convened an emergency meeting with health department and corporation officials to chalk out an action plan for dengue prevention and mosquito eradication.
