MADURAI

The movement of a photocopying machine to the counting centre for Tirupparankundram Assembly constituency located on Madurai Medical College premises caused concern among the representatives of a few candidates.

When the machine packed in a box was taken on a vehicle to the counting centre, representatives of DMK’s candidate P. Saravanan and a few other candidates raised suspicion over what was in the vehicle. An employee from the District Election Office, who accompanied the vehicle, clarified that it was a photocopying machine. However, the employee failed to show any document issued by authorities for bringing the machine to the representatives.

As there was a controversy recently surrounding the unauthorised entry of four officials to the counting centre for Madurai Parliamentary elections, located on the same premises, the representatives expressed concern over a possible foul play.

Dr. Saravanan later reached the spot and raised the issue with District Election Officer S. Nagararajan.

Mr. Nagarajan, however, clarified to the candidates that the photocopying machine was taken to the counting centre with the approval of senior officers since it was needed during counting.
