The Madurai District Additional Sessions Court No 6 has awarded life term to mother and son, Angammal (52) and Kasi Vishwanathan (32), in a murder case where the accused killed Thangaraj, the husband of the former and father of the latter.

The deceased, an autorickshaw driver from Othaveedu, near Nagamalai Pudukottai was a drunkard, who used to drink everyday. Over a period of time, he started pledging and selling his property to his brother for buying liquor. He beat his wife in the inebriated condition and this continued for a while. And on the night of April 22, 2002, when he started beating Angammal, his son intervened but he was not spared and was beaten up by Thangaraj.

During the early hours of next day morning, both Angammal and Kasi Vishwanathan had allegedly poured petrol on Thangaraj, who was sleeping in the pump room near his house, and set him ablaze, in which he succumbed to burns.
