Gone are the days when people had to stand under proper lighting and pose at the perfect angle to get the best pictures, saying “cheese.”

A team of ‘candid’ photographers is slowly but surely making its presence felt in the temple city with its natural shots of people, caught unawares, and giving them memories to cherish.

In an album with candid pictures, one can see moments in a wedding or an event that go unnoticed which are snapped by an observant team.

“While group photos and posed shots have always been the norms in weddings, people have slowly begun to prefer natural photographs that are not posed and that capture the essence of the moment,” said N. Manikandan, who runs ‘Aim Photography.’

City-based companies like his are now offering packages which consist of regular video coverage and photography as well as candid shots during the wedding and a post-wedding photo shoot.

“A team of candid photographers moves with the crowd and remains unnoticed. With the availability of superior editing and processing software to refine photos, candid photography is in demand,” said Francis Harry Roy, a postgraduate student who is involved in photography assignments.

While the initial investment for setting up a photography company and a team begins at Rs. seven lakh, the returns on specialised wedding photography packages are lucrative.

A city-based photographer stated that a package of regular wedding videography and photography and candid wedding videography and photography costs between Rs. 70,000 to Rs. five lakh. “Since these combined packages are in demand, we have a team of photographers to focus on all aspects of photography,” explained B. Balashanmugam, who owns Vani 3D Digital Studio.

Social media too has played a vital role in this trend. “Only in the last one year we have been getting specific assignments for candid shots at events in the city. People have come to know of this through social media and are eager to share and post such pictures taken at these events,” Mr. Balashanmugam added.

Special shots are not restricted to wedding alone as most couples prefer an outdoor post-wedding shoot. “Kodaikanal, Thekkady and Munnar are favoured destinations for such outdoor shoots. If there is not much time to spare, the city’s very own Tirumalai Nayak Palace is the perfect place for such photo shoots,” said Mr. Manikandan.
