After being headless for more than two years, Madurai Kamaraj University finally got a new Vice-Chancellor with the appointment of P. P. Chellathurai on Saturday.
Soon after the government announced his appointment, 62-year-old Mr. Chellathurai, who is no stranger to MKU, wasted no time and assumed charge as the 16th V-C late in the evening on Saturday.
Mr. Chellathurai, who has obtained doctorates in history and management, has served in various administrative positions, including as the Registrar of Periyar and Manonmaniam Sundaranar universities and the Faculty Head of National Institute of Youth Development.

He has also handled various administrative positions as Special Officer, Dean and Director of Constituent Colleges during his tenure as a Professor in MKU. He was serving as Director of Department of Youth Welfare Studies till his retirement from the university.
Highlighting his decades-long association with the university, Mr. Chellathurai, speaking to media after taking charge, said that he was well aware of the issues faced by the university and would initiate transformative measures from day one of his tenure. Stating that he had already prepared a detailed road map for the development of the university, he said, “The administration will be transparent and time-bound with zero compromise on integrity. It will also be friendly to every stakeholder.” He added that the administration would focus on all-round development of the university, with particular focus on research.
Thanking the Governor of Tamil Nadu and State government for providing him the opportunity, he said that he would strive to improve the ranking and stature of MKU not only within the country but also among the universities around the globe.
