Madurai Kamaraj University is gearing up to celebrate its golden jubilee in 2015.

Established in 1965 after a bill was passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the university has grown in stature and reach in the last five decades with the notable achievement being the recognition of ‘University with Potential for Excellence’ conferred by University Grants Commission (UGC) eight years ago. “We are looking forward to the golden jubilee celebration. The Syndicate members will meet and decide on the events,” Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan told The Hindu here on Sunday.

Dr. Mathivanan reminisced that her father, the late M.D.K. Kuthalingam, was the Vice-Chancellor during the time of its silver jubilee celebration.

The varsity’s first woman Vice-Chancellor said she felt satisfied with having improved the academic and infrastructure ambience on the campus. “Getting ‘A’ Grade re-accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and introduction of integrated courses were some of my achievements,” said the Vice-Chancellor, whose three-year term ends in April.

She said the remaining four months of her tenure would be used to tie up loose ends. On the university’s financial position and corpus available in banks, the Vice-Chancellor said she took a decision to have the deposits in various banks that offered high interest of over 10 per cent rather than putting the entire amount in a single bank.

“I gave attention to the non-teaching staff and consolidated pay workers. Many of them are receiving higher salary now; but I feel that I could have done more for non-teaching staff because most of them were very cooperative in my green campus endeavours,” she added.
