Tamil language should be given an official status to be used as the language of the Madras High Court and the State Government should press the Centre to take necessary steps in this regard, said Vaiko, general secretary, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on Wednesday.
Addressing a public meeting organised to condemn the Government for not taking action to announce Tamil as the official language of the Madras High Court here on Wednesday, Mr. Vaiko said that the State Government should immediately take steps in this direction without coming out with false promises and resolutions.
He recalled the days of anti-Hindi agitation of 1965 and how the students were attacked in Madurai by the Congress government which eventually resulted in the ousting of the party in the 1967 elections.

Tamil Nationalist Party leader P. Nedumaran said that the issue was not confined to advocates alone.
Problem for all
It was the problem of every citizen of Tamil Nadu.

No resolution
He also accused the State Government for not passing any resolution in the Assembly to declare Tamil as the official court language during the last four years.
S. Gunasekaran, Sivaganga MLA, Communist Party of India, M. Bhoominathan, urban district secretary, MDMK, and M. Saravanan, urban district secretary, Communist Party of India, also spoke. The Madurai Bar Association secretary, A. K. Ramasamy, presided over the meeting.
