Lamp sale under way at Poompuhar

With Karthigai Deepam festivities in the chill air, Poompuhar showroom of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has brought a glow to the scene by unveiling an exhibition and sale of brass lamps in West Veli Street in the city.

On display are a range of brass lamps made by artisans in Madurai, Vagaikulam in Tuticorin district and Nachiarkoil in Thanjavur district. “These artisans have been making brass lamps for so long. By exhibiting their products, we make their fine craftsmanship known to more people. The quality of the lamp is so good that it usually stays in the family of buyers for generations,” says showroom Manager V. Ganesan. “Many of these lamps are exported and we have a lot of non-resident Indian customers,” he says.

There are also terracotta lamps made by artisans from Arapalayam, Vilacheri, Melur and Manamadurai, and cost Rs.5 and Rs.800 each.

“ There is a 20 per cent discount for lamps crafted by artisans attached to the Poompuhar.” It come to close on December 6.
