Job-seekers scammed to the tune of ₹1 crore

A man, who duped people to the tune of ₹1 crore by enticing them with lucrative jobs abroad through his recruitment firm, was arrested on Sunday.

Suresh Kumar, 34, a resident of TVS Colony in Thiagaraja Nagar of Palayamkottai has allegedly scammed many job-seekers belonging to Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts by falsely promising them to get jobs that pay up to ₹1 lakh per month at supermarkets in Brazil.

After taking cash to the tune of ₹2-3 lakh from each of the job-seekers, he shut shop about six months ago and took off to Mumbai. His wife, and a broker, Yovan, were also missing.

Based on the complaint of Anbarasu of Kanniyakumari district, Karuppasamy of Sivanthipatti in Palayamkottai and seven others, the police formed a special team to nab the accused. The complainants had reportedly paid ₹27 lakh for their jobs.

The police received a tip-off that the accused would come to Tirunelveli on Sunday, after which he was arrested. Six passports and a car were seized from him.

The police said that he had duped up to 40 people, including the complainants, to the tune of ₹1 crore.
