In a daring burglary, 80 sovereigns of gold and over 2 kg of silver articles were stolen from two jewellery shops on Jadamunikovil Street under Vilakuthoon police station limits here.
The police said that unidentified burglars had broken open an iron grille gate of a small shopping complex that leads to a few jewellery shops. Later, the locks of iron rolling shutters of both the shops were broken open.
At the shop of V. Jayaraman, two kg of silver articles, including anklets, and ₹10,000 were stolen.

In its adjacent shop, belonging to T. Murugan, 80 sovereigns of gold and 250 grams of silver articles were stolen. In this shop, the burglar had made a small opening on the glass partition by breaking it to get into the shop.
The burglars laid their hand on the gold ornaments that were kept in a safe after breaking it open, Mr. Murugan said. However, they had left behind several silver articles kept in the showcase.
This shop was shut on Saturday night and Sunday was a holiday. However, Mr. Jeyaraman said that he had locked his shop after working till Sunday noon.

A police source said that only a young boy or a slender man could have gained entry through the small opening made in the bottom of the glass partition.
The police said that both the shops had not installed any CCTV cameras. Besides, the complex had not employed any security personnel.
However, Mr. Murugan, citing police personnel, said that CCTV video footage from another shop on the same street had captured the image of a man walking out of the complex with a bag at around 3.30 a.m. on Monday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Branch), Petchimuthu Pandian, inspected the scene of crime. Finger-prints were lifted from the shops.
