Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation’s (TANGEDCO) 33 KV sub station at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar here through video conferencing from her camp office at Kodanadu. It had been established at an outlay of Rs. 4.77 crore spent on purchasing land and equipment as well as construction.

According to TANGEDCO officials, the new sub-station would benefit around 8,000 power consumers in S. Alangulam, a portion of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Keezhapanangadi, Melapanangadi, Kosakulam, Anaiyur, Vishwanathapuram, Meenambalpuram, Income Tax quarters, Alamelu Nagar, Imayam Nagar, Prasanna Nagar, Indira Nagar, Central Excise quarters and Officers Town.

Inhabitants of these localities were earlier connected to Anaiyur sub-station. The new sub-station would also serve 6,000 consumers in Krishnapuram Weavers Colony and another portion of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar which had been receiving power supply from a sub-station at Tiruppalai situated at about five kilometres from Mahatma Gandhi Nagar.

The officials also said that distribution of power from a long distance had led to complaints of consumers receiving poor quality of power. Traders, owners of small industries and weavers among others had been complaining of low voltage and frequent disruptions of power due to the distance factor.

Hence, it was decided to establish a new sub-station for catering to the needs of around 14,000 consumers.

Apart from serving them, the new station would also benefit consumers served by Anaiyur and Tiruppalai sub-stations as the two stations would be relieved of power load estimated at around 3.16 MW and 2.96 MW respectively.
