A two-day international conference on ‘Recent trends in mathematical and physical modelling and bioresource management strategies’ was inaugurated at Thiagarajar College of Arts and Science here Tuesday.
The departments of Physics, Mathematics and Zoology jointly organised the programme, which mainly aims at exposing students to multidisciplinary research and work on conservation of bioresources.

College president Karumuttu T. Kannan elaborated on the need to establish intellectual property and the importance of obtaining patents. He said by possessing intellectual property, one could claim ownership and earn more. Narrating the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa, he said a spark (in this case ‘Purna Swaraj’) was necessary to carry a single idea forward.
College secretary Hari K. Thiagarajan and Principal D. Pandiaraja were also present.
Most of the discussion was dominated by talks on non-linearity in the first technical session by M. Lakshmanan, Professor of Eminence, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi. He spoke about the emerging science and connected it to natural phenomena like predictability of weather, share market, migratory bird patterns and natural disasters.

In the next session, Petri T. Piiroinen, Professor, School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, University of Ireland, Galway, spoke about relating population dynamics to non-linearity. R.V. Krishnakumar, Associate Professor of Physics, Thiagarajar College, chaired the two sessions.
S. Karuthapandian, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Alagappa University, spoke on ‘Marine microbial resources’.
