Inquisitive young minds battle it out for claiming top honours in a quiz competition

It was an interesting afternoon of intense quizzing interlaced with an entertaining set of questions where inquisitive young minds from various schools in the city battled it out for claiming the top honours.

The Madurai Quiz Society’s, ‘in-QUIZ-itors 2012’ held in Madurai on Friday saw many schools from across the city participate. The society which was formed by a group of youngsters with a keen interest on quizzing was having its second edition. Loosely inspired by The Hindu’s Young World Quiz, the event had all its excitement deserved for the battle of minds.

The screening round which had 30 questions saw 155 teams compete for the final six, teams from TVS Matriculation Hr. Sec. School, Jeevana School, Vikaasa School and Sri Jayendra Golden Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School and two teams from Mahatma CBSE made it to the top 6.

The craze for football and its penetration was evident in the very beginning of the finals; the six finalists were allotted their respective seating positions after they were given a choice to choose the favourite football clubs from the English Premier League, Italian and Spanish Leagues.

The finals had two rounds with a total of 30 questions; the last round was a rapid fire round. The questions that formed the quiz was a good mix of the past and the contemporary, biography of Steve Jobs, importance of Stockton to Darlington, the war between United Kingdom and Argentina over Falklands were among the few.

Pawan Kalyan in Andhra Pradesh, Puneeth Rajkumar in Karnataka and who is it for Tamil Nadu? When the answer for this question was flashed through a visual, the whole auditorium burst into laughter and clapped hands, the answer was ‘Power Star’ Srinivasan.

The question on what is O.P.Ramasamy Reddiar Complex popularly known as invited a set of funny answers with the teams coming up with the names of popular malls in the city.

The duo K Mothys Vikram and M Nitish from TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School emerged as winners scoring 65 points defeating the closest competitors AR.K.Arunasalam and S.Vishwesh Krishnan from Mahatma CBSE School. S.Gnana Shankaran, R.Abinav Karthikeyan of Mahatma CBSE – were the second runners up, M.Santhosh Ramana and T.Ramanathan of Jeevana School came fourth. K.Harshavardhan and T.P.Aakash Deva of Vikasa School came fifth and Sri Jayendra Golden Jubilee Matriculation Hr. Sec. School’s R.Kaushik, G.K.Sriram Nair came sixth.

Madurai Kamaraj University Vice Chancellor, Kalyani Mathivanan, gave away the prizes for the winners and other finalists. In her speech she said that it was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and quest for knowledge among young students. Stating that enthusiasm is infectious, the event made one feel the bond between the teachers and the students where the pride of the former was visible when they saw the latter bring laurels to their institute.

Madurai Quiz Society’s president, D Sundarnathan conducted the final round; the research for quiz was done by vice President, C Narendren, secretary, R. Srimukundan joint secretary S.Siddharth and treasurer, L Srinivas Arunachalam. The main sponsor for the event was Meenakshi Mission Hospital.
