Inmates of Sencholai home for mentally ill, run by Humanitarian Trust at Puthendal near here, came to the Collectorate, carrying empty pots, protesting against stoppage of water supply to the home for the past eight months.

Trust founder K. Nageswaran and home manager A. Syed Sheik Abdullah, who accompanied the inmates, including men and women, said that they were forced to stage the protest at the Collectorate as their representations to officials at all levels had gone in vain in the past eight months.

Water supply was stopped to the home after the main pipeline was damaged when the National Highways dug the shoulder area of the Madurai – Ramanathapuram national highway for extension, Mr. Nageswaran said. Since then, they had been making representations to the officials in vain, he said.

As they were running the home for mentally ill people, the district administration should accord top priority and immediately set right or replace the pipeline and resume water supply, he said.

When contacted, official sources said that the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) board had placed intend for buying pipes and the problem would be rectified within a couple of days.
