Injured in Periyakulam accident shifted to GRH

Thirty six people, largely children, injured in a freak electrical accident near Sothuparai dam in Periyakulam were shifted from Theni Government Medical College Hospital (TGMCH) to Government Rajaji Hospital here on Monday evening.

The accident happened on Sunday evening when a live wire fell on a tourist bus near the dam in which two boys, aged 15 and 18, were killed and about 40 people suffered burns of various degrees.

According to officials, sixty one people, predominantly students and relatives, from Achampathu in Madurai district had gone for a tour organised by an NGO when the accident happened. While the families of a few children had shifted them to private hospitals, the remaining were getting treated in TGMCH. They were referred for further treatment to GRH, which has advanced medical facilities, and also since the injured are natives of Madurai.

Madurai Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao, accompanied by GRH Dean M.R. Vairamuthu Raju, visited the injured persons on Monday evening. He instructed the hospital authorities to form a special team of doctors and provide intensive care to the injured people.
