Infant found in bush, rushed to GRH

A newborn female infant was found abandoned in a thorny bush close to the Central Vegetable Market near K.K. Nagar here on Sunday night.

The infant was rushed to the paediatric wing of the Government Rajaji Hospital in a serious condition.

Police sources said that a passerby had alerted the ‘108’ ambulance service after he heard the crying of the baby, when he went to roadside to attend nature’s call at around 9.30 p.m.

The infant, with its umbilical cord not removed, was admitted to the Neonatal Ward in GRH at 9.50 p.m. and the baby’s condition is stated to be “very sick.” Hospital authorities said that the baby weighing 2.7 kg had suffered ant bites and suffocation in the bush.

“Normally we keep the unknown babies in the ward till the health condition becomes stable and then hand them over to concerned department for rehabilitation. This baby too will be taken care under the Cradle Baby Scheme after the condition improves,” a senior staff nurse in the neonatal ward has said.

It was said that the baby was born only a couple of hours before getting abandoned in the thorny bush.

Three injured

Three members of a family from Kanyakumari district were injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with a bus on the Ring Road near the Airport on Sunday morning.

They were admitted to a private hospital in the city.

The injured were identified as Jeganbabu (32), Shalini (27) and their 7-month-old baby, Adhavan.

The accident took place near Mandela Nagar, when the bus proceeding to Shencottah hit the car.
