Illegal drawing of drinking water to attract legal action

March 16, 2017 01:07 am | Updated 01:08 am IST - MADURAI

Public can complain on 7449 104 104, says Corporation official

A special cell to look into the complaints of illegal pumping of potable water has been formed, said Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri here on Wednesday.

With successive monsoon failures, the reservoirs had not received copious water. As a result, the city has been facing huge deficit in getting its due quota of water. Alternative measures were being taken to meet the demand. By digging additional borewells and engaging private water tankers, the Corporation has planned to meet the summer with a challenge.

At this juncture, people have complained to the Corporation about a few residents resorting to illegal drawing of water in the city.

Surveillance has been stepped up on such premises and those drawing water by fitting electric motors illegally would face legal action and also disconnection of service instantly.

The Corporation has also been examining modalities to tie-up with Tangedco authorities to switch-off electricity for a short period of time while distribution of water was on in the respective streets/wards. “If such an arrangement works, then such illegal pumping of water could be prevented to a large extent,” an assistant engineer said and added that public can register complaints from their mobile phones at 7449 104 104 with specifications like: complaint, street name, ward number and send it for action. The details of the informers would remain confidential, he added.
