‘Halwa’ turns a protest tool for Thenur residents

May 27, 2014 10:07 am | Updated 10:07 am IST - MADURAI:

Residents of Thenur staged a unique protest at the Collectorate by distributing packets of ‘halwa’ to the people who had come for the weekly grievance meeting on Monday morning to symbolically represent that they had been cheated.

The group stood with a banner that stated the reasons for their protest and began distributing small packets of the sweet to curious onlookers who had collected around them.

The residents alleged that the Thenur Panchayat Union president, M. Logasundari, had siphoned off money which had been allotted for the infrastructural development of the area.

In their petition, they had said that when they complained earlier about the malpractices of the area president, the district administration had carried out a series of inspections during January 2013.

“It was found that Rs. 6 lakh had been amassed between 2012 and 2013,” the residents alleged in their petition.

They further stated that despite the findings and repeated complaints pressing for action against the panchayat president, nothing had been done till date. “We have repeatedly petitioned the district administration to take action but nothing has been done till date. So we decided to distribute ‘halwa’ to show how we had been tricked,” said P. Bhoominathan, a resident of Thenur.
