Eleven hairdressers of Sankarankoil who lost their shops, the only means of their livelihood, in a recent fire accident, have received subsidised loans under Prime Ministers’ Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).
Many hairdressers had set up their shops near Sankarankoil bus stand 20 years ago.
The 11 hairdressers who lost their shops to the fire, and their family members, submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran seeking financial assistance to set up their shops once again. After examining their need and seeing their pathetic economic condition, the Collector instructed the Lead District Manager to provide necessary financial assistance.

Subsequently, Lead District Manager M. Alagarsamy, a team of officials from the District Industries Centre and other departments visited the site of the fire and had a discussion with the victims to work out their financial requirement.
As all the victims are eligible under Prime Ministers’ Employment Generation Programme, applications were collected from the victims, processed and all the 11 applicants were selected at a task force meeting chaired by the Collector. Subsequently, the applications were forwarded to five banks — Indian Overseas Bank, State Bank of India, Canara bank, Indian Bank and Pandyan Grama Bank — at Sankarankoil. The banks provisionally sanctioned a loan of Rs. 72,000 each with a subsidy of 15 per cent of the project cost, i.e. Rs. 10,800.

At the weekly grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday, the loan sanction letters were handed over to the beneficiaries.
