The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association has termed the portrayal of doctors and government hospitals in the latest Tamil movie ‘Mersal’ as ‘untrue and in bad taste.’
In a press release, its president K. Senthil on Friday said that the TNGDA had asked the government doctors to ignore such movies and concentrate on treating dengue patients.
The TNGDA cautioned the public especially in rural areas and the poor not to take the depiction as real. The State-run medical institutions were the best in the country, Dr. Senthil said.

All government hospitals are totally free for treatment and hospitals are clean and of high standards, qualitywise. Even the best of private hospitals in the State have government doctors as specialists.
The Government Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Stanley Hospital, Government Rajaji Hospital and Omanthurar Speciality Hospital and many other private hospitals in the State are among the best in the country.
The TNGDA appealed to the cine directors to be more responsible socially in showing such scenes in a country like India, where a hero fighting with 20 people was considered by a few as real and wished to imitate them.

Such commercial ventures should not affect the functioning of health system in the State, he added.
