The Madurai city police have rescued a four-year-old girl child, Pavithra, who was kidnapped in May while playing in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital.

Addressing media persons, Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Sasi Mohan said that five persons, including a juvenile, were arrested in this connection. The arrested include P. Meena, 36; her son; and another woman, Janani, 21. Pavithra’s father, Vanavarayan and mother Sivagami, belonging to a nomad community, were selling their products outside the GRH when the girl was kidnapped.

A special team investigating the child missing case recently got a clue about the role of Meena of Reittanpatti near Srivilliputtur. When they interrogated her son, he spilled the beans.

The trio had sold the child to a couple in Tenkasi for ₹1.20 lakh through a person identified as Samudram, 81, of Mamsapuram and P. Ponnuthai, 69, of Sambavar Vadakarai Tenkasi.

The police have arrested all the five accused. Mr. Mohan said that the couple would be tried for illegal adoption. He appreciated the efforts of the special team including Mathichiyam Inspector Suresh and Anti-Child Trafficking Wing Inspector Murugesan.
