For the first time, the Madurai Corporation had made a foray into competitive examinations extending its focus beyond civic issues.
It has come forward to propel success for serious aspirants who are taking various competitive examinations of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC).
As a maiden initiative, the corporation on Tuesday launched free training sessions for TNPSC competitive examinations and promised to do much more for government job seekers who could not afford to go to private coaching classes.

Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa and Commissioner C.Kathiravan inaugurated the coaching classes at MADITSSIA Hall in the city and distributed latest study material for competitive exams which was prepared by resource persons in Chennai.
“The idea of giving free coaching came up after seeing scores of candidates studying in groups in open space in corporation premises. After a resolution was passed in the corporation council budget meeting last week, we started a full-fledged free coaching programme now,” the Mayor said.
Hundreds of TNPSC aspirants turned up on the first day and attended the coaching sessions conducted by a team led by Chennai-based resource person Raja Bhoopathi who is also handling similar coaching classes conducted by the Chennai Corporation.

The Commissioner too was equally supportive of the corporation’s foray into providing free coaching for TNPSC exams. “This coaching is for serious aspirants. Don’t take it as a time-pass affair. In coming days, the Corporation will focus on other competitive exams too,” Mr.Kathiravan said.
A. Devadoss, Assistant Commissioner (Zone-2), said that the candidates who had registered for the free coaching would attend classes as per the time-table given to them.
Suganthi Ashok, chairperson of standing committee on education, A. Mathuram, City Engineer, and Yasodha Mani, City Health Officer, were among those who participated in the meeting.
