Fisherman injured in “attack”

A fisherman of Rameswaram was injured after he was attacked allegedly by some Sri Lankan Navy personnel.

He was admitted to Rameswaram Government Hospital on Sunday.

Official sources in Rameswaram said that G. Mahendran and five others were engaged in fishing on Saturday when some people, said to be Sri Lankan Navy personnel, attacked them stating that they had crossed the international maritime boundary line.

They were chased away and their fishing nets damaged by the personnel, the sources said.

They inflicted injuries on Mahendran using some sharp implement, the sources alleged.

As many as 630 boats had set off for fishing on Saturday from the Rameswaram coast. Mahendran and others returned to the shores in the early hours of Sunday.
