‘No response from State government’

Hearing a petition that sought permission for conduct of the first death anniversary in memory of the victims of Thoothukudi firing, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday sought a response from the State.

The petitioner, R. Fatima Babu, an activist, said she had sought permission for conducting the event at either V.V.D signal, S.V.A school grounds, or any hall within Thoothukudi town limits. However, with the State failing to respond to the application, she said she had to move the High Court for relief.

A Division Bench of Justices G.R. Swaminathan and M. Dhandapani asked the State to respond on May 9.

The petitioner was also directed to provide information to the State on the number of participants, specific venue and the list of those who would address the gathering at the event.

The case was adjourned to May 9.
