The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday took suo motu cognisance of a letter written by the father of a tribal girl, who died under mysterious circumstances.

The letter, written by M. Vellaisamy of Bodinayakanur in Theni district, said that he and his family were constantly pressurised by a group of caste Hindus into offering his daughter in marriage to a person of the group but he firmly refused the proposal.

But his minor daughter was kidnapped and forced into marriage on December 2, 2018. Subsequently, he claimed that his daughter was found dead on December 4, 2018. The police, colluding with the caste Hindus, forced him to receive the body and perform the final rites. They had now closed the case as an act of suicide.

Complaining against the manner in which the investigation was conducted, the father sought a fair investigation and appropriate action against the culprits.

A Division Bench of Justices K. K. Sasidharan and P. D.A udikesavalu, taking cognisance of the letter, directed the investigating officer in the case to file a report. The court adjourned the case for filing of the report till January 28.
