Farmers’ leader files PIL against pollution of the Cauvery

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here accusing Tiruchirapalli City Corporation and other local bodies, individuals, and industries of polluting the Cauvery by letting out sewage and industrial effluents.

The petitioner, P. Ayyakannu (69), president of National South Indian River Integration Agriculturist Association, sought for a direction to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to initiate action against the polluters and file an action taken report in court.

A Division Bench comprising Justices A. Selvam and V.S. Ravi on Tuesday ordered notice to the Tiruchi Collector, the corporation and TNPCB after hearing preliminary arguments advanced by the petitioner’s counsel S. Muthukrishnan.
