Eviction drive in city continues

During an eviction drive conducted in Zone Two of the Corporation, officials removed encroachments made by several shops on Alagarkoil Road and New Natham Road in Tallakulam, K. Pudur and Moondrumavadi on Tuesday.

Among the encroachments was a huge shed put up by a fish stall chain at Pudur. On removal of this encroachment that has been there along the Judges Quarters for more than a decade, two tin shops permitted by the Corporation were restored to their original dimensions.

While the local body had allowed shops for only 5 feet by 6 feet, the shed that covered the shops were for at least 40 feet by 15 feet.

Corporation Assistant Commissioner A. Devadoss and Assistant Town Planning Officer I. Renganathan led a team of workers in the drive.

Mr. Devadoss said that six sheds illegally put up outside the shops were removed near the Tallakulam Post Office. At least four condemned autorickshaws that were dumped on nearby Tirumukkulam road and other spare parts of automobile workshops also were seized, he added.

Encroachments on platform along New Natham Road by seven fruit merchants near the Dean’s Quarters were also evicted. Few hotels also were subjected to action at Moondrumavadi.

“Make it regular”

Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal has instructed the officials to carry out the eviction drive on a regular basis in all the four zones.
