Efforts under way to improve pass percentage of Class X

As the Class X State Board public examination schedule for 2013 has been announced, officials in the School Education Department here have taken steps to improve the pass percentage of students based on an analysis of last year’s results.

While Madurai district registered an overall pass percentage of 91 per cent in the SSLC examinations last year, a large number of students (1991) failed in Tamil. A total of 44,538 students wrote the examination and 40,533 passed .

While 2,534 students failed in English, Social Science recorded 1,350 failures. In Science, 602 students failed, and 333 in Mathematics. “Students failing in Tamil is something to worry about. We have asked all teachers handling Class X students to take corrective steps immediately. The overall objective is to reduce the number of failures,” S. A series of training programmes for Class X teachers of all government schools in the district was under way (from January 4 to 11) in Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti educational districts.

Special study material was prepared based on previous years’ question papers and select portions in each subject, he said and added that the study material for all subjects had been distributed to schools and would be given to ‘weak students.’

The SSLC examinations will be held from March 27 to April 12. Nearly 47,000 students are expected to take them in the district.
