Drunk van driver mowed down pedestrians in Sattur

A drunk driver with a passenger van, mowed down a dozen of pedestrians and motorists, killing a 65-year-old man in the bazaar at Sattur on Monday evening. The condition of two persons is said to be critical.

The police identified the driver as A. Narayanan (32) of Nadu Soorangudi.

He had allegedly sped away the van on the Sattur-Kovilpatti road near the bus stand and ploughed through the road users at around 3.20 p.m.

People along the road had raised alarm to alert the road-users, but the drunk driver knocked them down in no time. N. Venugopal of Chokalingapuram was killed on the spot, the police said.

The injured have been admitted to different Government hospitals.

The police have secured the accused. Meanwhile, scores of angry people laid siege to the police station where the accused was kept.
