The draft rolls of the socio, economic and caste census were released by Collector L. Subramanian and received by District Rural Development Authority (DRDA) Project Officer Rohini Ramdas , here on Wednesday.

The census, which enumerated the number of people belonging to different castes and tribes as well as details with regard to their house, vehicles and land, was carried out keeping the 2011 population census as base. “The main objective of carrying out this census is to take stock of the basic facilities available in different parts of the district which will, in turn, give us an idea about the schemes to be implemented and works that need priority,” Mr. Subramanian said.

According to the socio, economic and caste census, there are 4.06 lakh persons from both rural and urban areas in the scheduled caste category and 11,906 persons under the scheduled tribe category. The census was carried out among 11.91 lakh people in the rural areas and 18.46 lakh persons in urban areas.

An official said that following court orders which had stated that the caste of the person should not be mentioned in the census, they had only classified the population as SC, ST and other categories.

Mr. Subramanian stated that the draft census should be kept in the gram sabhas on May 12 in rural areas.

“The draft census will be made available at all panchayat, municipality and corporation offices for the public to verify the details. If they have any grievances and need to update information, they can fill in the requisite forms and submit them before May 26 at both rural and urban centres,” he said. The final socio, economic and caste census for the district will be released on May 20 for rural areas and May 27 for urban areas.
