Disaster reduction awareness rally

An awareness rally by students on disaster reduction was flagged off by Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan here on Tuesday.

To mark the International Day for Disaster Reduction, the rally was flagged off from SLB Government Higher School.

The students carrying placards with the message on reduction of disaster raised slogans and went through the Duthi Girls Higher Secondary School, Parvathavarthini Street and culminated at the starting point.

As part of this programme, the Collector distributed pamphlets to the public on disaster reduction.

Mr. Chavan said that the focus of this year’s International Day for Disaster Reduction was on the traditional, indigenous and local knowledge which complemented modern science and added to an individual’s and societies’ resilience.

Knowledge of early warning signals in nature could be vital to ensure that early action was taken to mitigate the impact of both slow and fast onset disasters such as drought, heat waves, storms and floods.

Combined with scientific knowledge such as reports generated by meteorologists, local knowledge was vital for preparedness.

Mock drills on saving people during natural disasters were conducted by the personnel from Fire and Rescue department at the SLB Government Higher Secondary School.

District Revenue Officer A. Udhayakumar, Revenue Divisional Officer S. Madhiazyagan, Chief Education Officer V. Jayakumar and others were present.
