City Commissioner of Police, Sanjay Mathur, has advised cyber café owners to maintain log registers, either in physical or digital form, of customers using their internet/e-mail facilities.

Addressing a meeting on creating awareness on the Information Technology (Guidelines for Cyber Café) Rules, 2011, he said the log registers with the name, address, photograph and identification document would help the police in cracking cyber crimes, especially complaints on receipt of threat or obscene mails.

He also stressed the need to have back up history of websites accessed in the cyber café.

A representative from Ideacts Innnovations, a Pune-based software company, N. Vivekandan, made a presentation on free software for digitally maintaining the log register. “It will help the internet cafes to digitally store the identification particulars of the customers using the internet centres. The customers would be given a login identity and password, with which they can use internet in any of the centres that have installed the application, without having to manually enter their details,” he said. Inspector of Police, Cyber Crime, Jeevanandam, said that most of the 120 registered internet café centres in the city are using the software.
